What we do
Good readers can be more successful in and out of school.
The MTA-SZTE Reading and Motivation Research Group was established with the support of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Research Programme for Public Education Development (2021–2025) and has successfully received funding for a subsequent research cycle (2025–2029).
Our aims are to:
develop and test an evidence-based methodology to foster reading motivation and reading strategies;
conduct research supporting the application of this methodology; and
investigate the development of reading comprehension and the factors influencing this development among Hungarian students.
Adequate reading comprehension is essential for students to succeed both in school and beyond. Although achieving optimal reading comprehension typically takes about a decade, direct reading instruction in Hungary generally ends after the fourth grade. The methodology developed by our research group, Motivation-Based Reading Comprehension Development, aims to address this gap by offering solutions that can be integrated into various school subjects.
Aligned with the needs of Hungarian public education, our research group primarily focuses on supporting reading comprehension development beyond the lower primary grades, while our interest in reading development and its key influencing factors extends from the preschool years throughout the full span of schooling.
